Diese Entfernung ist für Mercy Dorcas Otieno Alltag.
Im Juli beginnt für sie ein neues Abenteuer: Die 22-Jährige wird vom Projekt “fremdsehen” aus, zwei Wochen in Irdning verbringen.

Mercy und ich treffen uns an einem sonnigen Maitag in der Grazer Innenstadt. Es ist unsere erste Begegnung und ich kenne von ihr nicht mehr als ein Foto. Unter der mir bekannten Berufsbeschreibung “Künstlerin in Community Art Projekten” kann ich mir nicht wirklich etwas vorstellen.
Als ich Mercy erblicke, ist sie mir auf Anhieb sympathisch: eine offene, herzliche junge Frau kommt auf mich zu und umarmt mich: “Du musst Annalena sein. Wie schön, dich kennenzulernen!”.
Du wirst gemeinsam mit 14 anderen TeilnehmerInnen am Projekt “fremdsehen” teilnehmen. Wie bist du dazu kommen?
Hast du eine besondere Ausbildung für die Workshops die du machst? Du bist ja noch ziemlich jung.
Mercy: Ich würde sagen, das ist Talent. Das hat weder mit Alter noch mit Kenntnissen oder Ausbildungen zu tun, sondern mit den Erfahrungen, die man gemacht hat und dem Potenzial, das man in sich trägt.
Erzähle mehr von deinem Projekt bei “fremdsehen”! Was sind deine Pläne?
Und am Schluss gibt es ein großes Fest…
Mercy: Genau. Ein großes Fest, wo die Arbeit der zwei Wochen präsentiert wird. Es wird auch ein Publikumsgespräch stattfinden, welche Erfahrungen die Leute gemacht haben und was sie mitnehmen.
Und ab dem Zeitpunkt wo ich in Irdning ankomme, werde ich auch jeden Tag über meine Erfahrungen bloggen.
Und was erwartest du dir? Was möchtest du persönlich von dieser Zeit mitnehmen und was erhoffst du dir von den Menschen in Irdning?
Was ist für dich der größte Unterschied zwischen Österreich und deinem Heimatland Kenia?
Wann fühlst du dich “fremd”?
Mercy: Fremd fühle ich mich, wenn ich in einem Gebiet bin, wo mich niemand kennt. Und alle schauen mich an und ich merke, ich bin wirklich „entfernt“ von den Menschen. Ich bin fremd. Dann habe ich das Gefühl, da bin ich am falschen Ort.
Hast du dieses Gefühl in Österreich oder Deutschland erlebt?
Mercy: Ja, das habe ich vor allem in Deutschland erlebt. Dann kommt auch noch meine Hautfarbe dazu und die Leute gucken dich von oben bis unten an. Da bekommt man auch selber Angst. Dann bin ich noch mehr entfernt und noch mehr “fremd”.
Und wann fühlst du dich “zuhause”?
Mercy: Ich sag das, wenn ich irgendwo hingehe, und die Leute sind offen und neugierig: Woher kommst du? Wie heißt du? Und was machst du hier? Wieso sprichst du so gut Deutsch? Dann weiß ich, ich kann mit diesen Menschen sprechen, mich dabei wohlfühlen und dann kann ich sagen, hier ich bin zuhause. Heimat ist für mich überall dort, wo ich mich wohlfühle und ich mich angenommen fühle, so wie ich bin.

Informationen zu Mercy:
Mercy Dorcas Otieno wurde in Nairobi in Kenia geboren. Sie hat dort die Schule besucht und maturiert. Nach ihrem Schulabschluss kam sie als Au-pair nach Deutschland und später nach Österreich. Seit ungefähr eineinhalb Jahren lebt die 22-Jährige nun bereits in Graz. Sie wohnt im Afro Asiatischen Institut und leitet afrikanische Tanz-, Koch- und Gesangsworkshops. Mercy hält in Schulen Vorträge über Kenia und die afrikanische Kultur und spielt nebenher Theater am Schauspielhaus Graz.
Die Zulassung zum Studium ist aufgrund bürokratischer Hürden schwierig und auch ihre Kenianische Matura wird in Österreich nicht anerkannt. Daher musste sie Zulassungsprüfungen in unterschiedlichen Fächern absolvieren. Bis jetzt hat sie alle bestanden und nur noch eine Mathematikprüfung vor sich.
Nächstes Semester möchte sie Soziologie inskribieren.
