Day 10: Wife: He might be a murderer. Husband: The guy looks nice. Wife: He might be a nice murderer!

On Breakfast, I met my new housemates; A retired old nice couple from Vienna and they’re here in Bad Mitterndorf for vacation. We had a long discussion about the priveleges of being retired; this includes being relaxed, having more free time for social activities, reading and vacations. in fact, I was the one defending those priveleges.. The Grass is always greener on the side!

After Breakfast, I left to the Gemindeamt for Info about Bad Aussee and going there. They told me it’s not far away, 15 minutes by bus or train. Yet, I decided to Hitchhike! I went back to the main street, and tried to get an Autostop to Bad Aussee for 20 minutes, but I did not succeed in getting any.

I went back to my room stayed for a while, and went for another trial!
few minutes later, my new Wiener housemates appeared with their car, and offered to offer me a ride to Bad Ausse. It wasn’t my plan, but I couldn’t refuse. During the short journey we kept comparing the Crime Rate in Cairo, Vienna and Graz, and how safe it is to get a hitchhike in this 3 cities! The wife suggested that I should carry on a pepper spray because a driver might be a criminal. On the Contrary, The husband assuered me it’s safe, because in fact a driver would be the one worried to offer me a ride as a foreigner with middle eastern look!

Anyways, we arrived Bad Aussee, and I wanted to visit the Kammerhof museum but It was closed for a 3 hours Lunch break! so I decided to have a walk in the center, this also included some hiking in the surrounding mountaions. Later, I visited the museum and it was really interesting. it includes: fossils, rocks, cloths, books, music and an interactive typical austrian “clapping” tutorial!

After the museum, I decided to get the second hitchhike to Grundlsee, I decided to capture it on video too! that wasn’t very easy! holding the camera in one hand, doing the autostop gesture with the other!
A red golf stopped after a while with an old man from Badaussee smoking a pipe in his Lederhosen and he accepted to offer me the second ride today! I had him on Camera (YUPIIII) and we talked a while about our project and Regionale10!

Grundlsee – what a wonderful place.. what an amazing scenery!!

Hitchhike 3: Grundlsee Bad Aussee
in my all hitchhiking experience, that was the first time when a woman, driving alone actually stops and accepts to pick me up! She was a Wiener too!

Hitchhike 4: Bad Aussee – Bad Mitterndorf!
I was about to lose hope, I stayed for almost an hour on the Highway trying to get a hitchike.. It was just useless!
People show different attitudes:
#1 they just don’t look at me and keep driving
#2 they look at me and smile
#3 they look at me but give an excuse for not picking me up

Ater many failed attemps, a family who just smiled at me few minutes go, drove back again and stopped. They turned to be going to bad mitterndorf too! It was a swedish young couple with a kid, the husband  is originally argentinan.. and they’re visiting a half swedish friend in Bad mitterndorf. we kept talking the whole journey.. discussing different issues. we went later for something to eat in a Guesthouse with their Bad Mitterndorfer friend.. and they storied the “behind the scenes” of picking me up!

They had this talk!

Husband: oh the’re some guy who is trying to get a hitchike
Wife: He might be a murderer
Husband: the guy looks nice
Wife: He might be a nice murderer
Husband: don’t worry let’s have a u-turn and pick him up
Wife: hmmm…

few minutes later
Wife: okay, he really looks nice.. but if he turns to be murderer.. I’m killing you both!!!

That was really a nice experience!.. to tell the truth,in Cairo, I would never stop to pick some stranger up! you never know what could happen next!
but I liked it .. four hitchhikes.. four talks.. six new friends.. few more people getting to know about my country and my culture!!

Day6:
Speeddating!

in the morning I had a meeting with Pfarrer Dr. Michael Unger in the Catholic church of Bad mitterndorf; we talked about the history of the church in the whole region, the reason why most austrian “dorfs” have  a wallfahrts church and the history of the church building in Badmitterndorf in addition to talking about the Egyptian Copts. The church building is very nice, small and cozy!

The Church in Baddmiterndorf is named after Saint Margaret, who is known to be the patroness of the farmers. The priest told me that farmers usually pray for her so that she would keep the kettle safe.

A very nice painting could be seen in the church  of the Parable of the Sower said by Jesus at (at Mark 4:1-20, Matthew 13:1-23, and Luke 8:1-15) showing a sower in Badmitterndorf region!

Friday Afternoon: Ennstal Classic

The City center was full of tourists and inhabitants watching the great Ennstal Classic with more than hundered classic cars; they varied from Fiat to Prosche, Ferrari to Mustang, MG and BMW and others. It was very nice the place was crowded and the weather was nice, a little bit hot maybe and music playing, people eating, drinking and taking photos.

Friday Evening: Speeddating

I went to Liezen, where I met the other participants in Fremdsehen and our guests and we had our speeddating event!
participants sat on one side of the Table, guests on the other Side, and we had only few minutes to know as much as we can about the opposite guest! then we switch to next guest. within every switch there was a main question to focus on.
questions like: Where do you feel foreigner, what does Home mean for you, What does a foreigner mean for you and in the last switch I had to find 3 similarities between me and the opposite guest!

I believe the event was really successful, I had the chance to discuss the problems I face as a foreigner here in Austria, I frankly talked about how do I see austrians, and I lisetend to many good views as well!

back to the question “What does the term “Home” mean?”
I would have really like to relate the word “home” to the word “Freedom”. I have always beleived Whenever I am free, I’m home. but unluckily that did not turn to be very true!

I am way more free in Austria than in Egypt not only because the different culture but also, because nobody know me here! Yeah of course there’re some people who know me, but I have less limits, less borders, less chains.

Yet I’ve never felt Austria is Home!

so What is home now? is it friends, family, same culture and habits? I just don’t know! is it a place where I spent 23 years of my life? It’s getting more and more confusing! but It also hurts to figure out, That: in this place where I feel home, I don’t feel maximum freedom!

Na ja, the “home” issue is even more complicated, because after a couple of years in Austria, whenever I go back to Egypt on vacations: I don’t feel it’s home anymore.. people changed, as well as the place itself, in only couple of years!

I changed too. I’ve never denied!

Day 5:
Dear Austrians, I like you…….nachdem Sie betrunken sind!

This morning I’ve been to the Skiing Hill (Kulm) between badmitterndorf and tauplitz. we used the telepherique to reach the top of the hill.. and one would not imagine how amazing is the view from upthere until trying it! Green green green hills and fields forming such a beautiful landscape. If i was ever a physician I would have advised all the city residents to go for an obligatory vacation in the countryside, at least once every month!

I originally come from a city with around 18 million inhabitants in its metropolitan region, 2 million cars and thousands of high rise concrete buildings,  tunnels, bridges and roads.. you can imagine how stressful is this.. traffic jams, noise, pollution and fast life rhythm.. even when you try relaxing for few minutes, it does not work out well because all you can see is the concrete jungle.. surrounding you from every direction. isn’t it true, that few days
every month in the green calm country side would just help us to function better?!
Thursday evening in bad mitterndorf:.. one of the best experiences I ever had in this country
Hint: I’ve been studying here since 22 months!

I was just walking to the center, passing by kirchenwirte guesthouse where I met some friends.. (friends?? na ja.. They are the tourists from Linz, I just met them couple of days ago at Eselalm! but who cares?? if some people are nice and friendly .. they’re probably friends)!

anyways, they invited me to join them; we kept drinking and singing for the whole evening.. in a such friendly ambiance, with certainly no borders. For the whole evening we were inviting who ever passing by in the street to join us.. and people just accept and join! it was just wonderful; tourists from Germany, Czech and Austria joined us in this nice evening! tourists we don’t know, tourists we just met, passers by.. everybody had the intention to celebrate and to be happy!

I know I might sound offensive.. but seriously, in two years, I’ve never seen Austrians that friendly and that open to the others before; it could be the alcohol, it could be the relaxing atmosphere, the vacation mood, the nice scenery, the lack of the city stress.. could be one of these reasons, all of them or just none!

After 88 weeks in this part of the world, I can finally say: Dear Austrians… I like you!

After a short visit to the gemindsamt, I left to the Heimatmuseum in Badmitterndorf! a wonderful old place where you can smell history inside. It’s full of beautiful as well as sad memories of this beautiful small place. Pictures, Photos, Pipes, Typewriters, Rocks, bones, masks, belts, dolls, books, documents and more..

One would be crazy, to waste this nice hot weather without going to the swimming pool for few hours.. and yes, I was not crazy!

later, on the evening, I met Evelyn from AAI-Graz, who was so kind to take me on a tour to Irdning, Stainach, Oeblarn, Liezen and back to Badmitterndrof where we had a nice talk at the Hotel Post!

In Irdning: we had the chance to attend the “super” presentation of my neighbor in the student house as well as the continent; Mercy Drocas from Kenya.

In Oeblarn: we attended the first bollywood movie evening, with pamir harvery.

In Liezen: we attended a regionale10 meeting with journalists from Die Presse, germany and switzerland!

long day huh?? but it’s not over yet!

After Evi left to Irdning, I went to the Witzinger bar in the center of badmitterndorf, where I had a kleine Radler and had a useuful talk with a mexican german Tourist!

Just like every tourist here, he visits bad mitterndorf Regulary since 24 years, his grandmother got a house here (okay like everybody..). Although he was raised up in the Ruhr-area, studied and works in Berlin, he said that he has his best memories in this place. “I’m just very related to this place, the most horrible accident of my life I had it here when I was thirteen, It took me two years to walk again… the first time i entered a disco, was here in bad mitterndorf, every year I come here.. I’m a part of that place”, Peto said.

we also talked about advantages and disadvantages of having parents of different nationalities!

Everyday, I’m meeting more people who are related to that place? what so special about it?

I believe there are more people living in my street in Cairo than the whole inhabitants of this city!

The more I talk with the people here, the more they mention the “identity”. the identity of the place is what makes it best!
The houses, the bauernhouses, the typical austrian guest houses, the food and the lifestyle! It’s calm, happy and friendly!

Personally, I’m getting more used to the place! I like walking around at night.. the more i walk, the more i discover!

non-important piece of Information: I envy Austrians, for the amount of beer they got!

This evening I’ve been to an awesome music evening in a hut, not very close to the center! it was just amazing, typical austrians in typical austrian cloths, drinking, singing.. sometimes dancing and all the time playing music! that was such a nice experience.. I like how the people were just very relaxed.. singing, dancing, chatting and laughing. I loved missing all the fast tempo and stress of the city life!

I sat with a group from upper Austria, they all work in the steel industry in Linz, and they’re here on vacation. we had some nice talk.. they mentioned that they’re all married except for one guy.. and I have to say that this one single guy was the one who looked happiest and full of energy !!!

isn’t it just amazing, when we meet some people in our lives for a short time, have some quality time with them, and then they just leave and we never meet again but we keep the memory of this meeting forever! :)

Day Two: Baden in Badmitterndorf!

na ja, so I really slept well last night, and woke up at 7 a.m had my shower and went upstairs for breakfast!

it was really nice; a simple austrian breakfast. it included a soft boiled egg (a la coque), which i had not

eaten since i was five !

On the breakfast i met my housemates, two tourists from Vienna, we had a little talk about the city of

badmitterndorf and the project fremdsehen, and they mentioned that they come here for vacation regularly

since many years, just like everybody i met so far, they added that they don’t like the pyramid houses!

Later on, I went to a meeting with Herr Buergermeister (who speaks fluent English), and it was really a very

informative meeting; i was accompanied afterward by Herr Referent fuer Tourismus und Fremdenverkehr for a

guided tour in Badmitterndorf!

The owner of my guesthouse advised me to go swimming, because the weather was really sunny and hot, and i

followed his advice and went to the pool where i spent some nice time and .. I had a tan too!

In the pool i had a short talk with two German girls who speak fluent English too (c’mon this couldn’t be

Austria), they mentioned that they come to bad mitterndorf every summer and winter, and they like the place

very much for a vacation! they live 7 hours away in Germany close to the German french borders.

Next, I had dinner at post hotel, and it tasted well!

I have to mention, that although badmitterndorf is a small “dorf”, diversity could be noticed! today i

visited a catholic church, evangelical church and stopped by a Jehovah witnesses Hall!
After I went back to my room, i kept thinking.. about this special relation between a certain human and a

certain place.. why do we always feel we belong to one place; a place that we like to visit often, a place

where we feel safe, relaxed or happy. This place is not always, the best, the cleanest, the biggest, this

place could have some special things, or could have nothing special at all!

is it the experience that one might have in a certain place, that strengthen this relation? are they the

people, the friends one make? is it the ambiance?

so finally I made it to bad mitterndorf:

getting there was not as easy as expected, big thanks to Oebb constructions!

anyways, I am staying here for two weeks; the place looks really nice and calm, the weather was just amazing except for some unexpected rain (typical austrian weather), the fish I had for dinner at Kirchenwirt was just amazing and tasty es hat gut geschmeckt!

Special thanks to H&M for making my life easier with their multi-pockets shorts; I don’t have to carry my backpack wherever I go. I had my cellphone, wallet, notebook, pen, rain sweater, handycam, room keys, empty plastic bag (in order to save the handycam in case of heavy rain), digital camera; I had them all inside my pockets!

This evening was the final game of the 2010 World cup in South Africa. I attended the game in a pub (take five), with some residents and hungarian visitors. VIVA ESPANA … they won the cup!
